The Admiral Hotel (also known as The Admiral and formerly known as the Admiral Semmes Hotel is located in downtown Mobile, Alabama. This historic hotel opened in 1940 and was one of the 32 founding hotels included, in 1989, in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's program Historic Hotels of America. The Admiral was also the first hotel in Mobile to provide air conditioning and telephones in every guest room.


History

When it was built, and until 2009, it was known as the Admiral Semmes Hotel, named for Raphael Semmes, captain of the Confederate States of America, Confederate commerce raider ''CSS Alabama''. In addition to the air conditioning and telephones in all guest rooms, the hotel also featured a coffee shop, a drug store, cocktail lounge and even a National Airlines (1934–1980), National Airlines office. In the late 1960s, singer Jimmy Buffett performed regularly at the Admiral's Corner cocktail lounge located at the hotel. In 2014 after being purchased by the Mississippi-based Thrash Group, it underwent an extensive, $27 million renovation. The renovations were overseen by architect James Flick of Dallas-based Flick Mars.


Description

The building is 12-stories high and originally had 170 guest rooms. After the remodel in 2014, it now has 156 standard guest rooms and five luxury, multi-room suites on the top floor. It has a depression era style and maintains its art deco architecture, art deco features, including the elevator doors. The interior has a more opulent look with marble floors, and oval balcony overlooking the lobby, a large spiral staircase and a chandelier. The hotel now features two restaurants and an outdoor pool as well as the original meeting spaces. There are eight event areas, including a ballroom, comprising .


Branding

* In 2009, it was known as The Radisson Hotels, Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel. * In 2015, after the remodel, it became part of the Curio (brand), Hilton Curio Collection and went by the name The Admiral Hotel Mobile, Curio Collection by Hilton. * In April 2020 the branding changed and it was known as The Admiral, A Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Wyndham Hotel. * In July 2022 the hotel was bought by Avocet Hospitality Group and continued to be termed as The Admiral. In December 2022, it is no longer listed as a current member of Historic Hotels of America. As of December 15, includes list of all 272 hotels that are currently members.
